Sunset Sunsail 502 ZXR | The Lightweight Entry-Level Boat Reel

The Sunset Sunsail 502 ZXR is a compact, star drag multiplier reel designed specifically for light to medium boat fishing. It offers a user-friendly introduction to the world of multiplier reels, prioritizing ease of use, durability, and a lightweight feel. Unlike heavy, all-metal boat reels, the Sunsail utilizes carbon components to reduce fatigue during long days on the water.

At Gerrys Fishing, we find the Sunsail 502 ZXR to be an ideal choice for beginners, junior anglers, or as a reliable guest reel on a boat. It comes pre-spooled with line, meaning you can take it straight from the box to the boat and start fishing for Mackerel, Whiting, or Bream immediately.

Technical Specifications

Key Features & Construction

• Carbon-Reinforced Body: The use of carbon for the flanges (side plates) and the spool is a significant advantage. Carbon is 100% immune to saltwater corrosion and significantly lighter than traditional aluminum or brass, making the reel much more comfortable to handle for long periods.

• Integrated Line Guide: One of the biggest challenges for multiplier beginners is manually guiding the line onto the spool. The Sunsail 502 ZXR features a mechanical line guide that automatically lays the line evenly, preventing tangles and dig-ins during the retrieve.

• Adjustable Power Handle: The handle features two mounting positions. You can adjust the length of the crank to either provide more speed for fast retrieves or more leverage for winching up heavier fish.

• Star Drag & Alarm Ratchet: The star drag allows for quick adjustments while fighting a fish, while the integrated clicker (alarm ratchet) provides an audible signal when a fish is taking lineessential when the rod is sitting in a rod holder.

Where to Use: Recommended Scenarios

• Mackerel & Scad Feathering: The lightweight design and line guide make it perfect for the repetitive motion of jigging feathers or sabikis for Mackerel.

• Inshore Bottom Fishing: Ideal for targeting Whiting, Gurnard, and Flatfish. The 502 size is compact enough to feel sensitive, yet robust enough to handle the occasional larger surprise.

• Light Wrecking: A great entry-level tool for scratching over wrecks for Pollack or Cod in moderate depths where ultra-heavy tackle isnt required.

• Junior & Beginner Setup: Because it comes pre-filled with line and has a built-in line guide, it removes the technical barriers that often discourage new anglers from using multiplier reels.

The Gerrys Fishing Verdict

The Sunset Sunsail 502 ZXR is all about hassle-free fishing. It doesnt pretend to be a heavy-duty shark reel; instead, it excels at being a reliable, lightweight tool for the most popular types of boat fishing. Its corrosion-resistant carbon construction means it requires very little maintenance, and the included line makes it incredible value for money.

Gerrys Tip: Even though this reel is lightweight, it has plenty of cranking power. To keep the 2 ball bearings in top shape, simply give the reel a light spray with fresh water after every trip and a tiny drop of oil on the handle shaft once a month
